Think Chaba

Chaba Thai Cuisine

This little known eatery, with a pink roof, should be at the top of your list for unique Southeast Texas dining. While the exterior may leave you feeling a little skeptical about choosing Chaba for lunch or dinner; the mouth-watering cuisine will turn you in to a repeat customer after one visit.

Chaba was recommended to me by a friend, and I must admit never having Thai cuisine previously I was apprehensive on my first visit. The dining room is small and intimate, tables are made to accommodate two or four, but on other visits I have seen tables pushed together to make room for larger groups. Keep in mind the dining room is small, less than twenty tables total. The dining area is decorated very simple and modern with images of Thailand and small sculptures.

At first glance the menu may seem a little intimidating with items such as “Pad Pik Sod”, “Gaeng Keaw Warn” and “Ka Pow” staring back at you. Don’t get distressed with the native tongue each dish is also numbered (for easy ordering) and its ingredients clearly explained. Many of the dishes are extra spicy and these items are noted by having a chili pepper next to their title. *Note: Extra spicy should be taken seriously. If you are unsure what to order the wait staff can recommend good choices for the first timer and most popular dishes. My favorite is #24 Pad See Eaw. Chicken stir-fried with rice noodles, egg, baby corn, broccoli, iceberg lettuce, carrots and Thai sweet soy sauce. The sweet soy sauce is so unlike anything you’ve ever had, combined the crunchy stir-fried vegetable this dish is delicious. It’s an instant favorite for everyone that I have recommended tries it. Also, tofu can be substituted for meat on any menu item for vegetarians.

Chaba’s is affordable, menu items range from $4.95-$13.95, vary from appetizers to chef specialties.  Menu items are discounted during lunch hours and portion sizes are generous. The staff is courteous and the dining experience is peaceful.  I wouldn’t recommend Chaba to families with children, the dining room is small and the menu only has two kids’ meal selections. However, this is great place for young professionals, date night or lunch with friends. The food and service have been consistently wonderful.
